Starting at 8a this Saturday (7 February), Colgan will be hosting this years 23rd Annual High School Erg Sprints (HSES) event. The purpose of this event is to encourage high school students to participate in the sport of crew. This includes supporting local high school rowing programs by giving coaches feedback on their athletes’ skills and to provide an opportunity for athletes to demonstrate that they are ready for the water after the long winter conditioning season. Additionally, parents are highly encouraged to join their son and/or daughter in healthy and fun team relays during the sprints. Of course, taking home medals is a great way to start the season. The Hylton Crew Boosters organization will be hosting an information night on
Thursday (5 February) at 7pm in the Hylton High School library. All are welcome and encouraged to come hear about the upcoming season, learn about the sport and how you can be part of the award-winning team, enjoy free food, and make new friends.
On Thursday (29 Jan), Prince William Crew Association (PWCA) posted the following announcement:
MOTHER NATURE HAD OTHER PLANS...
Due to the inclement weather and arctic chill that has descended on Northern Virginia, [PWCA has] made the difficult decision to cancel the 2026 Erg Sprints. While the school sidewalks and parking lots are mostly clear, our boathouse (from which we still needed to move 40 ergs, 200 miles of ethernet cables, an acre of gaffers tape, 42lbs of medals, and a bazillion other supplies) is completely iced in. Alexandria Public Schools are closed through at least [30 Jan], and for the safety of our participants, volunteers, coaches, and rowers, we are sorry to have to cancel this year’s event.
While we are disappointed not to be able to host this year, we remain grateful for the dedicated community that comes out and supports, exhibits, and participates in Erg Sprints year after year. This is a major undertaking, but the energy, talent, and dedication you all bring to the event make it well worth it. We hope to see you again in 2027.
On Satuday (24 Jan), several Hylton students, parents, coaches, and board members joined with others from Garfield High School and Potomac High School for a field trip to Maverick Rowing's indoor rowing tank at Landsdowne. For two hours, everyone had a chance to try out the indoor rowing tank as well as simulate erg sprints. The indoor rowing tank allows up to eight (8) people to experience rowing oars in tanks of water without the risk of flipping over a boat.
Tryouts for the 2025-2026 school year are occurring the week of 23 February 2026. Show up for winter conditioning now so you're already ahead of the curve.

Winter conditioning has begun. Everyone is welcome. During this time athletes participate in building endurance and strength for the upcoming regatta season. Each year starting the Monday after Thanksgiving and continuing throughout February, rowers meet four (4) days a week to work out. Rowers meet in the Commons at Hylton High School after class with the following schedule:
The Hylton Crew Boosters organization hosted an information night on 23 Oct. For a copy of the slides from that meeting, click HERE.
Hylton Crew continues the tradition of competing at the SRAA National Regatta in Camden, New Jersey. Rowers Ahna Boyce and Ginger St. Louis with alternate Ashley Kelley and Coach Melissa Ward represented Hylton Crew at the SRAA National regatta on 23 May 2025; finishing ahead of teams from Florida, Tennessee and two from New Jersey. Weather was a big factor in racing, forcing the canceling of semifinals for the 16 entries in this event. Congratulations to Hylton Crew for a great season of racing!
